DESI stands for Developing Ecologically Sustainable Industries, and also means “indigenous” in various Indian tongues. It was set up to provide weavers with a place to sell their handcrafted wares.
The DESI stores also have extensive book collections about tradition, sustainability and literature in English and Kannada.
